What is the history behind Hassan Tower in Rabat?

Origins of Hassan Tower

Hassan Tower, also known as Tour Hassan, is a minaret of an incomplete mosque in Rabat, the capital city of Morocco. Construction of the tower began in 1195 during the reign of Sultan Yacoub al-Mansour, but the construction was never completed following his death in 1199. The mosque was intended to be the largest in the world at that time, but only the tower and a few columns of the mosque were built, leaving it unfinished.

Architecture and Design

The tower, made of red sandstone, stands at about 44 meters (144 ft) high. It was meant to be accompanied by a grand mosque, reflecting the Almohad architectural style prevalent during that period. The intricate design of the tower includes beautiful decorative elements, typical of Moorish architecture.
